There are fundamental rules students must follow if they wish to submit essays that assure high marks. They have to abide by the requirements their professors have specifically stated. They also have to strictly follow fixed conventions and rules in writing academic essays.
Since the academic essay is another type of written composition, students must be able to follow various rules of spelling, referencing, grammar and punctuation, among others. To be able to hold the interest of the readers while reading the entire essay, a writer must be able to develop an effective writing style that any reader can follow.
There are several steps that students can go through if they wish to have an essay that is foolproof and strong:
- Create an essay outline
- Research
- Prepare an essay draft
- Revise the draft
- Complete the final essay copy
In completing the actual task of writing the essay draft, it is imperative that students formulate their own personal stand on the topic. The essay must be able to directly answer the essay question given and leave its readers a comprehensive account of what its message is. The essay must contain the three-part structure—the introduction, the body, and the conclusion. Each of these parts must be written cohesively, using an original angle to prevent the essay from being discovered with plagiarism. More importantly, the essay must undergo several revisions first before it is finally submitted to make sure that it has minimal or no errors.
There are certain aspects that students must also avoid and prevent from doing when approaching their essay writing task. Conversational language such as clichés and slang words must not be included in the essay. Redundancy and other forms of wordiness are prohibited. An essay without a strong closing statement is also unforgivable.
