Care Tips in Washing:
Washing Barong Tagalog has to be done with extra care because of its fine embroidery and material of fabric. Due to this a Barong Tagalog is actually recommended for hand wash to be able to maintain its special beauty. Dry cleaning and machine washing actually damages its jusi and piรฑa fabric.
Special Hand washing:
1. Simply dissolve a small amount of mild detergent with cold water in a basin then soak garment to free of dirt. Add a small amount of white vinegar to the mixture if the fabric is already yellowish. Note that the acid in the vinegar can help remove the yellowing in the fabric.
2. Hand wash the Barong gently.
3. Rinse the Barong until laundry soap is removed and never squeeze or twist the fabric.
4. You can simply hang it and let it drip and dry. For safety reasons, please use a plastic hanger to make sure it will not be stained and ruined by the hanger wire.
Special Ironing:
In ironing a Barong Tagalog Dress, you need to prepare a damp, clean, white cloth or towel. Lay the garment on the ironing board then wipe the damp cloth to the Barong making it a little wet and not much. Then press it with a moderate heat. Never pull the fabric to straighten it.
You may also apply spray starch all over. For hand embroidered Barong it is advised to lay thick towels on the ironing board then invert the Barong on the towels and iron the embroidered part on the backside to retain its embossed effect. After ironing the embroidered area, revert the Barong to its outer side to iron the body and sleeves. Carefully hang the barong after ironing to retain its beautiful normal shape.
Clean the garment as described above before storing. Then store it in your closet and cover it with dark breathable cloth to prevent discoloration over long periods of time making it useful for any further use of Barong Tagalog for Wedding Occassion.
